Kate Walker Training has offered supervisor training in Texas since 2006, when Dr. Kate Walker, PhD, LPC-S, LMFT-S, began teaching it with Dr. Judy DeTrude. The social work course is led by Dr. Ashley Durbin, PhD, LCSW-S, a Council-approved social work supervisor. Kate Walker Training, LLC is an ASWB Approved Continuing Education (ACE) provider (#2821).

What Texas Requires to Become an LCSW-S

Council-approved supervisor (LCSW-S): According to the Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council (Texas's BHEC), which oversees the Texas State Board of Social Worker Examiners (TSBSWE), you need an active Texas LCSW in good standing, at least two years of practice at the LCSW level, and a 40-hour supervisor's training program acceptable to the Council. Review the current rule, 22 TAC §781.404.

Under 22 TAC §781.404, the 40-hour course must be taught by a licensed social worker with Council-approved supervisor status, completed within 90 days, and include at least:

3 hours on defining and conceptualizing supervision and models of supervision
3 hours on the supervisory relationship and social worker development
12 hours on supervision methods and techniques, including roles, focus, group supervision, multicultural supervision, and evaluation methods
12 hours on supervision and standards of practice, codes of ethics, and legal and professional issues
3 hours on executive and administrative tasks, including the supervision plan, supervision contract, time for supervision, record keeping, and reporting

This course covers all five, with hours at or above each minimum.

You apply to the BHEC for supervisor status, and the board makes the final decision.

If I finish this program, am I automatically a supervisor?

No. This course provides the 40-hour supervisor training program Texas requires. To become a Council-approved supervisor (LCSW-S), you meet the remaining requirements, apply, and pay any applicable fees. Texas's BHEC makes the final decision.

Is this course approved by the Texas social work board?

Texas's BHEC doesn't approve or keep a list of 40-hour social work supervisor courses. Instead, the rules set the standards: the course is taught by a licensed social worker with Council-approved supervisor status, completed within 90 days, and covers five content areas with minimum hours. This course is designed to meet each of those standards under 22 TAC §781.404.

How long do I have to complete the course?

How many CE credits does this course provide?

Social workers who complete all requirements receive a certificate showing 40 ASWB ACE continuing education credits. Kate Walker Training courses fulfill the Texas social work rule requiring that 50% of continuing education come from a designated provider type.

Can you guarantee the board will approve me as a supervisor?

No. Texas's BHEC has final say. If you are missing experience or transferring from another state, the board may have additional requirements, and rule updates can change what the board requires.

This course is online but do I ever get to talk to an instructor and ask questions?

Yes. Instructors and curriculum specialists attend a weekly live virtual study hall on Zoom, where you can ask questions and talk through course concepts. This is included with every plan.

Are there payment plans?

This course is designed for licensed clinical social workers in Texas who want to provide clinical supervision, including those licensed outside Texas who plan to supervise in Texas. It covers the Texas laws and rules you need to supervise LMSWs working toward the LCSW.

Course Description

The LCSW Online 40 Hour Supervisor Training Course is a fully online, self-paced program for clinical social workers applying for Council-approved supervisor status in Texas. It blends foundational supervision theory with applied ethics, multicultural competence, and Texas-specific regulatory requirements, and is delivered through readings, video lectures, and quizzes.

Quiz Policy and Minimum Passing Score

Each lesson quiz requires a minimum passing score of 70%. There is no limit on retakes; you may review the material and retake a quiz as many times as needed to pass.

This online course provides 40 hours of continuing education in an asynchronous home study format. Course hours are calculated per ASWB standards (6,000 words of text = 1 hour; 1 hour of video = 1 hour). Kate Walker Training courses fulfill the Texas social work rules requiring that 50% of continuing education courses come from a designated provider type.

Social workers must complete the entire course, all quizzes, and a course evaluation to be eligible for CE credit. Your official certificate is available to download inside the course once you finish.
